Hello Zen - Goodbye Stress

Did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? Although stress is unavoidable, there are several healthy ways in which you can manage it, with acupuncture being one of them. It has been proven to not only reduce stress, but help in the prevention of several chronic conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, as well as head and neck pain, just to name a few. In fact, acupuncture provides a safe and effective option for those seeking a natural approach to the treatment of stress and anxiety related symptoms.

How does it work?

With consistent acupuncture sessions, patients can begin to experience a profound difference in their overall well-being. Think of it as physical therapy for the nervous and circulatory system; when the nervous system is firing correctly and blood is moving freely, we flourish. In contrast, when the nervous system is out of balance or blood flow is impeded, glands and organs do not have as much power to heal and stay healthy. This is just one of the reasons why acupuncture is such a great addition to help promote and maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, to achieve maximum results, treatments should be done regularly.

Stress and the Body

Stress can wreak havoc on the body in many ways. In can show up as aches & pains in the body, sleeplessness, and anxiety. When you can recognize that stress is causing imbalances physically, acupuncture can be a great way to start to create some relief. Daily, millions of Americans deal with chronic pain, most commonly in the knee, shoulder, elbow joint, and back. Countless studies have shown that acupuncture helps to relieve this pain, without the side effects of medication. In addition to chronic pain, chronic stress often shows up in the form of insomnia. A meta-analysis of research regarding the use of acupuncture for insomnia suggests that it is a powerful tool for treatment. Additionally, acupuncture can be a game changer when it comes to managing anxiety. For example, the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies published an online study in October of 2013 where students who underwent a 20-minute acupuncture treatment were found to have reduced anxiety and improved memory immediately after the session. In a study led by Eshkevari, researchers at Georgetown University used lab studies to demonstrate that acupuncture slows the body’s production of stress hormones. Their findings were published in the April 2013 issue of the Journal of Endocrinology. With a consistent treatment plan in place, acupuncture can be a great, natural resource for stress management.

Stress Management

There are many healthy ways to manage stress that partner well with acupuncture. When stress starts to creep in, take some time to simply just breathe. Recognize that the stress is present, take a deep breath, then exhale it out. You can take it a step further by reciting an affirmation with each inhale and exhale. For example, when you breathe in, say to yourself, “I am strong and capable.” When you breathe out, say to yourself, “I am calm and relaxed.” By taking the time to breathe positivity in and out, you can begin to relax. Make some time for yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes a day to meditate. Being able to just sit in a quiet space, free from all distractions and ‘to-do’ lists can provide a much-needed respite from the day-to-day activities that can become overwhelming. Consider taking a yoga class; the ancient practice of yoga has been used for years to calm both the body and mind. These holistic approaches are great techniques that compliment acupuncture nicely.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Stress can also show up in our skin, which can lead to pricey appointments for anti-aging procedures. Acupuncture is an all-natural alternative to promote health and beauty without breaking the bank. Cosmetic acupuncture creates subtle, natural looking changes to the skin over time; therefore, acupuncture works best in a series. In addition to addressing the superficial signs of aging, it also targets the internal stressors that add to the aging process. Needles are inserted carefully into creases in the face, creating small microtrauma to the skin that produces that stimulates collagen production while increasing blood flow. Known as the body’s natural “filler,” collagen is known to increase elasticity and muscle tone. The boost in blood flow helps to nourish and revitalize the skin, creating a dewy glow and more youthful appearance. Consider this safe and effective treatment for improving the skin under the eyes, correcting complexion, reducing fine lines, evening skin texture & tone, and much more.

What to Expect

It is perfectly normal to have some hesitation before your first treatment, but we can assure that our Zen Adviser will make you feel comfortable and confident from the second you walk into Modern Acupuncture. You’ll be directed to the Zen Den and have seat in your personal relaxation station, which is made up of lounge-style recliners separated by curtains for privacy. The licensed acupuncturist will ask you what your wellness concerns are and recommend a treatment plan that is tailor made just for you. There is no need to be worried about the needles, as they are very thin; in fact, they are smaller than a single piece of hair. Our licensed acupuncturists use distal needling, which may include areas other than the specific point of pain. You might feel some sensation with the procedure, but in general, acupuncture is not a painful process. You can expect your first visit to last 30 – 45 minutes, with follow-up visits typically taking 30 minutes. Lastly, you will not be required to remove any clothing, as we are able to work with our patients fully dressed. After your session, you will receive a refreshing herbal to help with healing and detoxification. This holistic approach doesn’t just target the symptoms but gets to the root of the issues and brings focus to the bigger picture, thus promoting overall well-being.

Aftercare

To achieve the maximum benefits from acupuncture, it’s highly recommended that you practice self-care after your session. Get plenty of rest and drink lots of water to both stay hydrated and to cleanse the body. In addition, treat yourself to a nourishing meal and consider incorporating herbal tea into your routine. Finally, make sure to book your next appointment, as acupuncture yields the best results with repeat treatments.
